Forehead (mark/seal in)

body

= Loyalty of mind and allegiance

Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

= Eternal / Ancient nature

His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire.

Hand / right hand (mark in)

body

= Authority / allegiance / commerce control

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark.

And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come.

The angel explicitly provides a dual interpretation: the seven heads are both seven mountains (geographic) and seven kings (political).

Seven horns (of the Lamb)

body

= Fullness of power

stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God.

Revelation 5:6

Horns consistently symbolize power/kings in Daniel 7:24 ("the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings") and throughout prophetic literature. Seven = completeness.

Ten horns

Pale / Green (chloros)

color

= Death / pestilence

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

Red / Scarlet

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Stony ground

element

= No root / superficial faith that withers under persecution

But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

Matthew 13:20-21

Jesus defines stony ground as those who receive the word with joy but have no depth. When trouble comes, they immediately fall away.

Sun

element

Thorns (among the seed)

element

He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

Matthew 13:22

Jesus explicitly defines thorns as worldly cares and riches that choke the Word. Luke 8:14 adds "pleasures of this life." The word is received but cannot produce fruit.

Trees

= People / rulers / nations

Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great... The tree that thou sawest... it is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong.

Daniel 4:10,20,22

Daniel interprets Nebuchadnezzar's tree as the king himself. Judges 9:8-15 uses trees for leaders. Psalm 1:3: the righteous man "shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water." Isaiah 61:3: "trees of righteousness."

Wind / four winds

element

= Strife, war, political commotion

Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.

Daniel 7:2

= Bitterness / poisoning / calamity

And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Brass / Bronze (belly and thighs)

material

= Greece / third kingdom that rules over all the earth

The brass portion of the image is explicitly the third kingdom (Greece under Alexander). Brass/bronze also represents judgment: the brazen altar and brazen serpent (Num 21:9).

Clay (mixed with iron)

material

= Weakness / human fragility / divided kingdoms

And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

Daniel 2:43

Fine linen

material

= Righteousness of saints

And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

= Babylon / the most excellent kingdom

Thou art this head of gold.

Daniel 2:38

Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar that he IS the head of gold. Gold = first and greatest of the four kingdoms. Also represents purity: Job 23:10 "when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." Rev 3:18: faith tried by fire.

Gold tried in fire

material

= Faith purified through trials

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich.

Revelation 3:18

1 Peter 1:7: "the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire." Gold tried in fire = faith refined through suffering.

Iron (legs of iron)

material

= Rome / fourth kingdom that breaks all things

And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.

Daniel 2:40

Iron represents crushing, conquering power — explicitly the fourth kingdom. Rome's iron rule is proverbial. The iron continues into the feet mixed with clay (Dan 2:41-43).

Precious stones (twelve foundations)

material

= Beauty and permanence of God's city / the twelve apostles

And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones.

Revelation 21:14,19

Each foundation stone is named (Rev 21:19-20): jasper, sapphire, chalcedony, emerald, sardonyx, sardius, chrysolyte, beryl, topaz, chrysoprasus, jacinth, amethyst. Corresponding to the twelve apostles.

Silver (breast and arms)

Stone cut without hands

material

= God's eternal kingdom / Christ's kingdom

Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces... And the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

Daniel 2:34-35

Daniel 2:44: "the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed." The stone not cut by human hands = divine origin. It destroys all earthly kingdoms and fills the earth.

Five

number

= Grace / God's goodness / a few

And he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples.

Matthew 14:19

Five loaves multiplied by grace. Five wise/foolish virgins (Matt 25). Five smooth stones of David (1 Sam 17:40). Tabernacle measurements in fives (Exo 26:3). Grace operates in small numbers.

Four

And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth.

Revelation 12:6

Prophetic day

number

= One literal year

After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years.

Numbers 14:34

Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness.

Daniel 9:24

Man created on day six. 666 = man's number tripled (Rev 13:18). Six days of labor before the Sabbath. Goliath was six cubits tall with six pieces of armor (1 Sam 17:4-7). Always falls short of seven.

Six hundred sixty-six (666)

number

= Number of the beast / number of a man

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Time, times, and half a time

And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Daniel 7:25

Appears in Daniel 7:25, 12:7, and Revelation 12:14. Cross-referencing with 1260 days and 42 months confirms: 1 time + 2 times + 0.5 time = 3.5 years.

And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Revelation 21:14
