Ezekiel 34:10

Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.
8

As I live, saith the Lord God, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

9

Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord;

10

Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.

11

For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

12

As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

Counter-Arguments

The strongest case that this verse does not belong in this theme.

Literal Fulfillment

While the language is concrete, the "shepherds" and "flock" are widely understood as metaphors for leaders and the people of Israel, suggesting a symbolic rather than strictly literal fulfillment.

Annihilation / Destruction

The verse describes the shepherds being removed from their position and prevented from exploiting the flock, but it does not explicitly state their physical destruction or ceasing to exist.

Destruction / Perishing Language

The verse describes a cessation of activity and a removal of power from the shepherds, but it does not explicitly state that the shepherds themselves will be destroyed or perish. Instead, it focuses on the deliverance of the flock.

Prophets & Social Justice

The verse focuses on God's direct action against the "shepherds" for their failure to care for the "flock," rather than explicitly depicting a prophet speaking on behalf of the oppressed or confronting unjust systems.

Prophetic Methods of Communication

The verse describes God's judgment against unfaithful shepherds and His intention to rescue His flock, but it does not mention *how* this message was communicated to Ezekiel or any other prophet. The focus is on the content of the divine decree, not the method of its reception.
