Isaiah 28:22

Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord God of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.
20

For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

21

For the Lord shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

22

Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord God of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.

23

Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.

24

Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?

Counter-Arguments

The strongest case that this verse does not belong in this theme.

Annihilation / Destruction

The verse warns against mocking to avoid strengthening "bands," which could imply continued subjugation or hardship rather than complete destruction.

Destruction / Perishing Language

The verse warns against mockery to prevent "bands being made strong," which could be interpreted as a consequence of their actions rather than a direct statement of destruction, and the "consumption" is a future event that is "determined," not necessarily an active perishing in the present statement.

Literal Fulfillment

The "consumption" and "bands" could be interpreted metaphorically, representing spiritual or societal decay and bondage rather than a physical, concrete destruction or literal chains. The phrase "determined upon the whole earth" might also be understood as a general decree of judgment rather than a specific, physically observable event.

Prophetic Methods of Communication

The verse primarily focuses on a warning and a divine judgment, not on the specific mechanics of how Isaiah received the information. While Isaiah states he "heard from the Lord God of hosts," this phrase indicates the source of the message rather than detailing the method of communication (e.g., dream, vision, audible voice).
