For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men.

Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord.

17

Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.

Counter-Arguments

The strongest case that this verse does not belong in this theme.

Annihilation / Destruction

The verse describes a state of being "small" and "despised," which implies a diminished existence rather than complete destruction or ceasing to exist.

Literal Fulfillment

The terms "small" and "despised" could be interpreted metaphorically to describe a loss of influence or status rather than a literal reduction in physical size or universal contempt.

Destruction / Perishing Language

The verse describes a state of being "small" and "despised," which are conditions of reduced status or humiliation, not necessarily physical destruction or perishing. The language used does not directly refer to an act of destroying or consuming.

Punishment Language

The verse describes a future state of being small and despised, which could be interpreted as a consequence or a change in status rather than explicitly using language of active divine punishment, torment, or vengeance.
