Revelation 20:4

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
2

And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3

And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

4

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

5

But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

6

Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Counter-Arguments

The strongest case that this verse does not belong in this theme.

Symbolic / Figurative Language

The verse describes literal events and entities, such as thrones, souls, beheadings, and a specific duration of a thousand years, which can be understood as straightforward historical or future occurrences rather than symbolic representations.

Two Resurrections

This verse describes a group of people who "lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years" after being beheaded, but it does not mention a prior resurrection event for any other group, nor does it explicitly state that this living and reigning constitutes a *second* resurrection distinct from a *first* one.

Literal 1000 Years

This verse explicitly states "a thousand years," which is a literal numerical value, making it difficult to argue against its support for a literal thousand-year period without introducing external interpretive frameworks.

Saints Reign in Heaven

The verse describes the souls of those who were martyred living and reigning with Christ for a thousand years, but it does not explicitly state that this reign occurs in "heaven" or a "celestial location." The text simply says "they lived and reigned with Christ," which could be interpreted as an earthly reign.

Timing of Judgment

The verse describes who reigns and for how long, but it does not explicitly state when the final judgment occurs in relation to that thousand-year period, focusing instead on the reward of specific individuals.

Symbolic Millennium

The verse explicitly states "a thousand years," which, when read at face value, denotes a specific, literal duration of time rather than an indefinite or symbolic period.

Judgment Separated

The verse describes individuals living and reigning for a thousand years, which could be interpreted as a period of reward or a specific phase of existence, rather than a direct separation between a general resurrection and a final judgment.

Judgment at Resurrection

The verse describes individuals who "lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years" after being beheaded, implying a resurrection or revival, but it does not explicitly state that judgment occurs *at* this resurrection or as part of the same event. The phrase "judgment was given unto them" refers to the individuals on the thrones, not necessarily to those who were resurrected.
