Zechariah 13:2

And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.
1

In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

2

And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

3

And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the Lord: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.

Counter-Arguments

The strongest case that this verse does not belong in this theme.

Annihilation / Destruction

While the verse speaks of "cutting off" and causing things to "pass out of the land," these actions primarily describe removal and cessation of influence rather than the literal destruction or annihilation of living beings.

Destruction / Perishing Language

While the verse uses "cut off," which is listed in the theme definition, the primary focus is on the removal of idols, false prophets, and unclean spirits, rather than the destruction or perishing of "the wicked" as a general category of people.

Future Fulfillment

The phrase "in that day" could be interpreted as referring to a specific, imminent historical event rather than a distant eschatological future.

Literal Fulfillment

While the verse uses concrete language, the "cutting off of names" and "passing out of the land" could be interpreted metaphorically as a complete eradication of their influence and memory, rather than a strictly physical removal.

Dietary Laws Still Binding

The verse explicitly mentions "unclean spirit" (רוּחַ הַטֻּמְאָה - ruach hatum'ah), which refers to a spiritual entity or influence, not to dietary categories of clean and unclean food. The context of Zechariah 13 is about the purification of the land from idolatry and false prophecy, not about food laws. The "unclean spirit" is paralleled with "prophets" (false prophets) and "idols," indicating a spiritual and religious defilement, not a culinary one. There is no linguistic or contextual basis
