Counter-Arguments

The strongest case that this verse does not belong in this theme.

Total Abstinence

The verse describes a punitive consequence where the people are unable to enjoy the fruits of their labor, not a command or ideal for abstinence. The inability to drink the wine or gather the grapes is presented as a curse, not a choice.

Symbolic / Non-Fermented Wine

The verse explicitly mentions "wine" and "grapes" in the context of planting vineyards, which are traditionally associated with the production of fermented wine. The reason given for not drinking the wine or gathering the grapes (worms eating them) does not alter the inherent nature of the product being described, which is wine.
