Exodus 31:16

Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
14

Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

15

Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

16

Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

17

It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

18

And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Counter-Arguments

The strongest case that this verse does not belong in this theme.

Sabbath Commandment

The verse describes the Sabbath as a "perpetual covenant" which, while implying an obligation, doesn't explicitly use terms like "commandment" or directly link it to the Ten Commandments or the broader Mosaic Law in this specific phrasing.

Seventh-Day Sabbath

The verse explicitly mentions "the sabbath" but does not specify it as the "seventh day" or a "rest day" within its own text. While the Sabbath is traditionally understood as the seventh day, this verse itself does not provide that detail.

Sabbath as Perpetual

The verse does not explicitly state that the Sabbath itself is perpetual, but rather that the *observance* of the Sabbath by the children of Israel is for a perpetual covenant, which could be interpreted as the covenant being perpetual, not necessarily the specific practice.

Israel-Specific Promises

While the verse explicitly mentions "the children of Israel," the concept of a "perpetual covenant" could be interpreted by some as having broader spiritual implications beyond ethnic Israel.

Time-Bound Fulfillment

The verse describes an ongoing practice ("perpetual covenant") rather than a prophecy with a defined duration that is expected to be fulfilled at a specific future point in time.
