Nehemiah 10:39

For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.
37

And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.

38

And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.

39

For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.

Counter-Arguments

The strongest case that this verse does not belong in this theme.

Ritual / Sacred Use

The verse explicitly states that the "new wine" is an "offering" brought "unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister." This directly links the wine to sacred/ceremonial contexts within the temple service, leaving no room for misinterpretation of its use.

Israel-Specific Promises

This verse describes an action taken by the Israelites (bringing offerings) and a commitment they make ("we will not forsake the house of our God"), rather than a promise or prophecy *directed to* them from God.

Symbolic / Non-Fermented Wine

The verse explicitly mentions "new wine" (tirosh in Hebrew), which is often understood as unfermented grape juice. However, the verse does not use "wine" symbolically; it refers to a physical offering brought to the temple. The interpretation of "new wine" as unfermented is a textual interpretation, not a symbolic usage within the verse itself. The verse describes a literal offering of agricultural products, not a metaphorical representation.

Earthly Sanctuary System

While the verse mentions elements associated with a sanctuary system (offerings, chambers, priests, porters, singers, house of God), it primarily focuses on the *actions* of bringing offerings and the *commitment* not to forsake the house of God, rather than describing the structure or function of the sanctuary system itself.

Total Abstinence

The verse explicitly mentions "new wine" as an offering to be brought to the temple, indicating its use and presence in a sacred context rather than commanding its avoidance or presenting abstinence as an ideal. The focus of the verse is on the provision for the temple and its workers, not on personal consumption or abstinence from wine.

Ongoing Atonement

This verse describes the physical bringing of offerings to a physical temple by specific groups of people (children of Israel, children of Levi, priests, porters, singers) for the purpose of maintaining the "house of our God" on earth. It makes no mention of Christ, a heavenly sanctuary, intercession, or the application of a sacrifice, which are all central to the theme of "Ongoing Atonement."

Wine vs Strong Drink Distinction

The verse mentions "new wine" as an offering but makes no mention of "strong drink" at all, let alone distinguishing it from wine.
